Artists Who Use Tone

Henry MooreHenry Moore - Moore is a sculptor who draws his designs using tone to depict form. He uses markmaking to define the shadows in the darkest tone, then tones of grey to show the darkest parts of the actual sculpture. He seems to work on darker backgrounds (like this one) and often adds the highlights in white or a light tone. He uses little lines to build up the tone and depth to the drawing. I like his work because it has dramatic contrast but is blended to create a portrayal of the sculpture.:

Emma Stibbon

Emma Stibbon - Stibbon is an artist who works in a black and white palette who displays tone. She has quite a 'painterly' approach to tone with watery ink drawings. Her tone is shown through blocks of black, mid greys and the white of the background as the highlight. She draws the landscapes and countryside and I like her work because it's a different portrayal of landscapes to other artists, in tone rather than colour. It has a very dramatic yet photograpic effect.:

It has a very dramatic yet photograpic effect, with a feeling of nostalgia because of the black and white colour scheme.

Raymond Pettibon

Raymond Pettibon - is an artist who was popular in the 80's as he created californian punk rock posters and album art. His work uses dramatic tone with mainly black and white only. This gives it a very 'poster' look. I like this was of creating tone, as it shows the shadows and highlights without any blending, but using mainly a linear approach to colour blocking. I like the use of text within his art as it gives a 'cartoon' feel to it, and is more interactive and playful with the viewer.:
